PQShield began as an Oxford University spinout. Founder Ali El Kaafarani says he started post-quantum cryptography research at Oxford in 2015, developed the company idea in 2017 and officially founded PQShield in May 2018. The company develops post-quantum cryptography software libraries and hardware IP, including products for embedded devices, chips and security systems. Its team has participated in international standardization of post-quantum algorithms. On June 20, 2024, PQShield announced a $37 million Series B round. On April 24, 2025, it announced the UltraPQ suite, including a post-quantum Root of Trust for ASIC and FPGA hardware. The company helps organizations evaluate cryptographic infrastructure and design and implement quantum-resistant security solutions.
